Look at the forecast the day before, but be sure to check again the same day, as weather conditions can change quickly in Polynesia.<\/li>\n<li><b>Start your hike early<\/b> to avoid being caught out after dark.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Prepare yourself physically,<\/b> as some hikes can be long and demanding. It\u2019s important to know your fitness level \u2014 and that of your companions \u2014 before setting off.<\/li>\n<li><b>Always let someone know your route<\/b> and estimated return time, especially if you&#8217;re hiking alone. If you&#8217;re a beginner, avoid solo hikes altogether.<\/li>\n<li><b>If your hike takes you near a marae<\/b> (sacred site), do not touch or move any stones \u2014 these are sacred places and must be respected.<\/li>\n<li><b>Most land, even in the mountains, is privately owned.<\/b> Landowners usually allow hikers to pass as long as they are respectful and ask for permission. Sometimes a small access fee is required \u2014 and sneaking in is very frowned upon.<\/li>\n<li>Leave no trace and always take your trash with you.<\/li>\n<li>Respect the local wildlife and plant life. It\u2019s a beautiful trek that will take you up to 600 meters above sea level at the Toevere Pass. From there, you\u2019ll enjoy a unique panorama over the island\u2019s interior, featuring the famous Diad\u00e8me summit. This pass was once used by the French army to outflank the Fort of Fachoda. The path becomes increasingly rough. Pass the houses until you reach a blue gate where you can park. The valley is open to the public only one month a year during the orange season. Follow the path for about 1 km to a line of trees on the right side of the road. Then turn right to find the trail that descends to the river.
