A living legacy
Created in 1881, Heiva is one of the oldest festivals in the world. At a time when traditional dances and songs were forbidden, it emerged as an act of cultural resistance. Today, it has become an emblem of Polynesian pride, an event eagerly awaited by locals and travelers alike, eager to discover the soul of the islands.
“Heiva” in Tahitian means “festival,” and that’s exactly what you’ll experience: a celebration of the senses, of movement, and of beauty. On the To’ata stage, sacred chants, powerful dances, and majestic costumes follow one another in a whirlwind of emotion.
When dance tells the story
Every evening, the pūpū ‘ori – dance troupes – offer breathtaking performances. Sometimes more than 100 dancers, dressed in handmade costumes made of plant fibers, feathers, and flowers, recount legends, myths, and life stories through every movement and every drumbeat.
The himene (traditional songs), carried by captivating choirs, resonate with the beat of the to’ere and pahu, the iconic percussion instruments of Polynesia.
