Two rhythms shape ’ori Tahiti. The ’ōte’a is driven by percussion: fast, precise, all power and hips. The aparima is its opposite, soft and narrative, told mostly with the hands.

So if you watch a performance and the mood changes completely halfway through, that is why. Listen for the drums to drop away, and watch the hands take over the story.
