Main Media Outlets in Tahiti (TV, Press, Radio, Web)

I like to stay informed about what’s happening in French Polynesia!

While internationally we might turn to outlets like France 24, Le Monde, or The New York Times, here in the fenua (our islands), we have our own local media to stay updated on the news. Whether through radio, newspapers, TV, websites, or social media, everyone can find the information that suits them.

Traditional media…

In the past, people mostly relied on print newspapers. I remember as a kid, my grandparents would often ask me to go buy the papers. We had a choice between “Les Nouvelles” or “La Dépêche de Tahiti” – they were part of our daily routine. Later on, in 2012, the daily paper Tahiti Infos launched and was even distributed for free across the territory.

Radio is also a popular source of information for Polynesians. It often plays nonstop — in cars, in homes, everywhere. Favorite stations? People know the frequencies of Tiare FM, Radio 1, Hiti FM, Radio Tefana, Radio Bora Bora, or even NRJ by heart. The content ranges from ads and call-ins to games and news updates. Whether you’re in traffic in the morning or on a lunch break, just turn on the radio to stay in the loop about what’s happening in the fenua.

Every weekday evening, many older residents also make it a habit to watch the TV news — either live at night or early in the morning as a replay. You can choose your preferred language and channel. It starts with Tahiti Nui Television (TNTV) at 6:00 p.m., offering a Tahitian-language edition, followed by a French version at 6:30 p.m. Then there’s Polynésie la 1ère at 6:30 p.m. in Tahitian, and again at 7:00 p.m. in French. That way, you stay informed every day with news from across the islands.

New ways to stay informed…

Since the arrival of the internet, smartphones, and social media, the way we consume news has changed dramatically, especially since the early 2010s. With a more “connected” younger generation, traditional media had to adapt to a noticeable shift. TV news, radio, and even print newspapers have now moved online and onto platforms like Facebook. Feel more concerned? Great — here are a few useful pages to help you stay up to date on news from French Polynesia.
