An Island with a Historical and Natural Past

Makatea is not only a playground for climbing enthusiasts, it’s also a place steeped in history. For over 60 years, the island was mined for phosphate, before the mines closed in the 1960s, forcing the inhabitants to leave. Today, the island boasts a fascinating mix of industrial remains and spectacular natural landscapes.

Makatea is an ancient volcanic outcrop covered in coral and limestone. This exceptional setting offers a diversity of panoramas and unique biodiversity that make the island a rare place in the world where history, nature, and adventure meet.
