Rent a car

Renting a vehicle in Tahiti is the key to discovering the sights at your leisure. With careful planning and a reliable rental agency, you’ll be free to explore every corner of Tahiti or its islands, creating unforgettable memories of your Polynesian getaway.

Choosing the right rental agency

Before embarking on your island adventure, it’s crucial to choose the right car rental agency. Tahiti is home to a number of reputable companies offering a variety of vehicles, from compact cars to rugged 4x4s, adapted to the island’s sometimes bumpy roads. Compare rates, rental conditions and available options to find the agency that best suits your needs.

Required documents

Make sure you have all the necessary documents before going to the rental agency.

To rent a car, you must present the following documents at the pick-up location:

  • original driver’s license
  • payment method (credit card, cash, XPF cheque)
  • deposit, usually a credit card will do

For drivers aged 70 and over in French Polynesia, a medical certificate is required. Visitors must show an itinerary confirming their status.

Additional drivers must be present with their original license and sign the contract. For special rates, please present proof of payment at the pick-up.

Copies or declarations of theft/loss of license are not accepted. The international permit must be accompanied by the original permit. Initially, present the identification card and payment method with the same first and last name.

Driving in Tahiti

Driving in Tahiti may differ from what you’re used to. The roads can be narrow, winding and sometimes steep, but it’s the ideal way to explore the most remote corners of the island. Respect speed limits and be aware of local road conditions.

Warning: most of the time, easements lead directly onto the main road, so be on the lookout for unexpected vehicle exits. Animals also litter the roadsides.

Recommended routes

Once you’ve got your vehicle, it’s time to plan your route. Explore the west coast for its beaches, visit Vaipahi Gardens for an immersion in lush vegetation, or venture into the island’s interior to discover hidden valleys and waterfalls.

Service stations and logistics

Before setting off on a day’s exploration, be sure to check fuel levels and locate service stations on your route. Tahiti also offers many dining options, so don’t forget to plan stops to sample the local cuisine.

Vehicle return:

When your adventure comes to an end, return the vehicle to the rental agency in the same condition you received it. Make sure you respect the return conditions agreed at the time of rental.
